Impatient Cooking

August 14th, 2008 · 9 Comments

My sister said, and I quote, “I was looking at a recipe book and there were all these great pictures with flowers, and different plates, and cutlery and table clothes and some doo-dad to make it look homey and interesting, and I said, Morgan should do that.” long pause. “Then I thought, no that is not what his cooking is all about. First, that stuff is not him and secondly, he is cooking for one person, in one pan, with as few dishes to wash as possible, and he is photographing just before getting serious.”  That last phrase is mine. It’s just one guy trying to survive and show everyone else that it can be done and yet be good, nutritious, and look great. And if you haven’t tried any of them yet, you just do not get the point. My sister? She has still not gotten the point. Give her time.

rice lentils peas tomatoes and white sauceLiving Alone in Israel Potpourri (yes, I know the usual definition of potpourri). This is high protein, high this, high that, all mixed together with spices under a blanket of melted cheeses. Combo natural rice, lentils, peas, crushed tomatoes with  cumin, oregano, garlic powder, sweet paprika. Two types of cheese, milk, mushroom soup mix, salt. If that wasn’t good, I don’t know what is, or ‘was’ in this case.
And the sauce? Don’t need the sauce but that’s just to humor the taste buds. Must consider them. You don’t know how hard they work to get this stuff down us. It’s one of the best advertising campaign strategies ever devised. And it wasn’t devised by us. Maybe that’s why it’s so good.

[Decided to photograph too late] Looked so terrible that I just could not photograph it in all good conscience until I started eating it, and then it was too late. So jot this down for a time when you will be eating in the dark and really want something good. A sauce made of stewed crushed tomatoes, hummus, mushroom soup powder, milk, olive oil, and spices oregano, garlic powder, paprika. All poured over a burger sitting on a burger bun. And if you still have some light on, extra paprika on top. I also poured it over some Brussels sprouts I had fried. Made them taste good also. Now you know it must have been good.

pancake cinnamon-raisinraisin pancakeCinnamon-raisin pancake. Just wanted to show the artistry. And all the stuff which gives it its name. That’s 40+ grapes with the water taken out. Would anyone eat 40+ grapes in a sitting. Thought not. Well, I just did. And so would you if they were disguised as raisins. Cake flour, egg, smoking hot olive oil in skillet (but not Teflon or other non-sticks if you have birds) Please read my piece on this in July-August edition of http://tsingle.info It can kill them. The original maker, Dupont, finally came out and printed on their website that birds should not be kept in the kitchen while cooking. Big admission.

minced vegetarian burger in a burgerloafCorned Burger Loaf.  Burger (of course), corn straight from the cob (a frozen corn on the cob), flax (out of flour), small amount of corn muffin mix (again, out of flour) to help the holding-together, olive oil, egg. Spices: Coriander, garlic powder, turmeric. Mixed with no water (I did have some of that), and put on low heat with pan cover on. Great with catsup if I had any. Great anyway. But, is it done? Cut it just so you could see. A fly came in and wanted some. Don’t know if that’s a good or bad sign. He left immediately. Now, I really don’t know, or is it just that I am so much bigger. The final sauce was made with corn muffin mix, olive oil, mushroom soup powder, dairy creamer (milk ran out on last coffee), salt. The point to this: When you are out of a lot of things, or game plans, punt.

Hey would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re using? I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m having a difficult time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique. P.S Sorry for being off-topic but I had to ask!
