Never Completed

I have run into all sorts of people who have said that they can not do what they always wanted to do because of... and then they give a number of reasons. It's as if they are measuring their lives with what they did not accomplish instead of reaching out to fulfill some dream. It is rare to hear of someone who is getting a degree at the age of 76 for instance. But not rare to hear someone young saying I don't have the time, or the money, or the opportunity... We should not let any particular barrier, stand in our way. There are many examples of people who have overcome monumental odds to accomplish what they wanted to do.

The normal cop outs:
I am too old for that.
It would cost too much money.
Everyone depends on me.
I don't think I could learn all that.
It would take time I do not have.
I am not in the physical shape I used to be.
My husband/wife/daughter/son/friend/everyone says I can't do it or won't let me do it.

There is this saying that "you only live once". Whatever you do now will fulfill a certain part of you which is not fulfilled and you deserve that. Perhaps that is the way to frame the whole idea. Every step is a step toward completion, of being who you really are.

Print, or copy the following section and put in an editable file, then write or type in your answers.

  • What would you like to do if you had it all to do over again.

  • What would you want to do if you did not have any blocks or lack of funds?

  • What is it that you always wanted to do but never tried.

  • Who are you?

  • What is the one thing that would fill your life?

  • I have always wanted to:

  • If only I had the right circumstances, I would:

  • I am really interested in:

  • Someone once said that I would make a great:

  • I was always very good at:

  • BUT, I am not able to do this because : (be as specific as you can be here)

Remember that there are a lot of ways to get what you want. Sometimes we get stuck thinking there is only one way, or even only one preferred way which automatically shuts out any other possibility and stops us dead in our tracks. Now, answer this:

  • I can get around that by: (put down every possibility you can think of here)

O.K., now comes the interesting part.

It does not matter how small the thing is that you decide to do at the beginning. Just start it and see where it leads you. Start doing at least one thing TODAY. Right now. Not after you take a short nap. Not after you ask your husband/wife/daughter/the neighbor if they think you can do it.
